Archives Temp Intern

Sul Ross State University
Internship
On-site
Del Rio, Texas, United States
Primary Responsibilities
This temporary intern project at the Archives of the Big Bend ( ABB ) will revolve around the complete processing of the Don Burgess Collection, including rehousing, assessments, finding-aid creation, and long-term digitization and/or outreach plans for the collection. The purpose of this project is two-fold. First, it offers the opportunity to process a complex collection from beginning (box-listing and condition assessment) to “end” (publication of the finding aid and development of long-term plans for the collection). Secondly, it allows the Archives a much-needed second pair of eyes and hands to evaluate the secondary value of the collection, process the collection, and make it searchable and available to researchers much sooner than our current workflow and staff availability allows. The project breaks down into three phases (4weeks, 4 weeks, and 2 weeks). The first takes place onsite and consists of reviewing our donor-created inventory of the collection and comparing it to the boxed contents through folder-level box lists. While doing so, the employee will be assessing the condition of the materials, any risks or special housing needed, and assessing the collection’s secondary value to potential researchers and the Archive’s existing collections insofar as addressing known the employee is particularly targeting, and will gain an in-depth and holistic understanding of the daily considerations, decisions, and tasks necessary when appraising and processing a new collection.
