Subject:Middle School: Summer ESL Steering Committee

Dates/Hours: The committee will meet in person on June 25, 26, and 27 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM each day.

Purpose: We are seeking dedicated educators to join the ESL summer committee focused on the collaborative development and refinement of instructional materials for the first 5 days of ESL instruction. This committee will help ensure a strong start to the school year by focusing on relationship-building and the introduction of key instructional routines. The team will work to strengthen instructional practices, integrate digital tools, and differentiate instruction to effectively support the diverse needs of multilingual learners.

The goals of the ESL Summer Steering Committee will be to:
•Design ready-to-use PowerPoint slides and materials for the first 5 days of ESL instruction, grades 6-8.
•Incorporate scaffolds aligned with key language uses (Inform, Explain, Narrate, Argue) to support multilingual learners at various
proficiency levels.
•Create models that demonstrate effective use of the English 3D digital platform, workbook, and iLit platform to support instruction
and student engagement.
•Ensure that all ESL instructional materials align with MA and WIDA 2020 Standards

Minimum Qualifications:
1.Licensed in English as a Second Language (ESL) by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education
2.Successful experience working with English learners in grades 6-8
3.Knowledge of second language acquisition, linguistics, and sheltering content approaches.
4.Understanding of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks for ELA and WIDA 2020 Standards

Responsibilities:

1.Participate in three in-person collaborative workdays during the summer (June 25-27)
2.Partner with colleagues to develop ESL instructional materials that promote language acquisition for students in grades 6–8.
3.Ensure alignment with the Massachusetts Frameworks and WIDA English Language Development Standards.
4.Engage in professional discussions focused on ESL best practices, instructional routines and second language acquisition.
5.Design PowerPoint presentations for use during the first five days of ESL instruction in September 2025.
6.Review and provide constructive feedback on instructional materials created by fellow members of the ESL Steering Committee.
7.Communicate and collaborate with K-8 Department Head of Bilingual, Jennifer Hunter

Compensation: According to the Contract – Up to 15 hours.
