Summary

King County International Airport/Boeing Field (KCIA) is seeking an undergraduate intern entering their 3rd/junior or 4th/senior year to work in collaboration with KCIA’s Innovation and Maintenance Sections. You will gain hands-on experience in airport maintenance business processes and technology applications and systems that are critical with maintaining the airport’s business data and infrastructure.

The responsibilities of the Innovation and Maintenance Business Applications Intern include performing data entry, business process improvements, users training, data analytics and visualization with mentorship and guidance from the Innovation Business Applications Specialist, reporting to the Innovation Section Manager and Maintenance Manager. Specific tasks may include data gathering, QA/QC and normalizing data, data entry, creating charts and graphs to tell the story behind the data. The internship will help the student apply their academic skills to gain firsthand knowledge of computer and technology skills and how they apply in an airport environment. 

KCIA’s internship cohort program will provide opportunities to learn about careers in an airport environment and to be supervised and mentored by an airport professional.  As part of the KCIA’s internship cohort you will have the opportunity to learn from, mentor and work with fellow KCIA interns from other areas of expertise and background. Through these experiences we aim to build a strong team that will become future airport and government leaders!

Job Duties

Job Duties:

  • Data entry in the Airport’s Cityworks asset management system’s data (i.e. creating and closing corrective and preventative maintenance work orders, assigning tasks, etc.) and other business solutions applications data.
  • Develop preventative maintenance (PM) parameters, work with Maintenance team (trades) to develop PMs, set-up PMs, and communicate with Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, and Crew Chiefs of PM status.
  • Making sure assets are associated with work orders where appropriate.
  • Assists with eliminating blanket work orders and migrating blanket work orders to cyclical work orders.
  • Perform QA/QC of asset management and other maintenance data (i.e. ensuring no duplicates, labors hours are entered on the right work order, consistency of usage of asset management system’s data fields).
  • Create metadata and develop standards and best practices to support systems and data.
  • Create custom reports, dashboards, technical standard operating procedures, administrative, and help documents to support all users (i.e. standard operating procedures, guides, and training documents).
  • Assist in the development and/or revisions to administrative systems, process and procedures, and workflows within assigned work unit.
  • Assist users on the use and adoption of Cityworks technologies and other business solutions applications.
  • Assist in data collection and analysis for assigned research projects; prepare summary reports of analysis.
  • Help develop monitoring and tracking systems to support work activities.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

We are looking for candidates who:

  • Enrolled as a college student from an accredited institution.
  • Tech-savvy, experience with data entry in application or database
  • Skill in data analytics, data visualization, and/or building reports with Microsoft Excel and PowerBI
  • Skill with creating data entry forms with Microsoft Forms.
  • Strong communications skills, people-oriented, and teamwork
  • Strong technical proficiency required, including Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment. 
  • Ability working with diverse individuals and customers and maintaining effective relationships.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service. 
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, matrixed work environment. 
  • Ability to quickly adapt and respond to changing work responsibilities, changes as well as initiatives.
  • Excellent organization, written, and verbal communication skills in a dynamic environment. 

Supplemental Information


Work Location: This position will be onsite during the summer at the Airport Terminal Building and hybrid during the school year with onsite and telecommuting. You must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university and live within a reasonable distance to the King County Airport.

Schedule: Up to two-year internship starting a week after the 2025 school year. Part-time/Full-time hours: 20 - 40 hours per week depending on student’s availability per their school schedule.

Who May Apply: This recruiting effort is for current college students (returning for the 2025-2026 academic year) from an accredited two- or four-year institution.

Work Schedule: This is a 40 hour per week position for the summer normally working Monday through Friday, 8 – 5 p.m. and 15-20 hours per week during the school year. There may be rare times when after-hours, weekends and/or holidays are required. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible.
