INTERNSHIP:  The Town of Wake Forest seeks a highly motivated and energetic student in the Parks & Recreation field to join our dedicated Recreation team and complete an internship for their related field of study.
 
NATURE OF WORK:  The selected individual will gain experience and understanding of how a Parks & Recreation department functions. They will assist in planning, organizing, and implementing various activities within the Recreation Programs Division. The Internship runs from approximately mid-May through mid-August. Interns are expected to work 20-40-hours per week, but may include additional hours as needed, including nights and weekends.  This is a non-exempt classification under FLSA, and as such, may be eligible for overtime compensation.

The Programs Division Internship is a dynamic and comprehensive learning experience in Wake Forest. This 10-week internship program provides exposure to various facets of recreation programming, including operations, program management, facility maintenance, and community engagement. The intern will work closely with division staff to support daily operations and contribute to the success of Town programs and events.

The Town of Wake Forest agrees to provide:

  • A comprehensive experience designed to expose the intern to the many areas of parks and recreation administration.
  • Supervision by a permanent full-time staff person for guidance through the internship.
  • Clearly defined responsibilities, weekly meetings to provide feedback on the intern’s performance, and periodical evaluations to the intern’s university as necessary.
  • Assignments that are meaningful and beneficial to the intern and the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least two years of study in a related post-secondary program 
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Knowledge and/or experience working with recreation programs and activities
  • Demonstrates problem-solving skills 
  • Computer skills in a variety of software programs
  • Ability to interact with the public in a positive manner
  • Ability to work independently and with people of all ages and abilities 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which includes some evenings and weekends 
  • Responsible and self-motivated


Physical Requirements
Work in this class is generally sedentary, with the ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently and constantly to move objects.  Work requires the employee to have dexterity in typing/data entry and operating standard office equipment.  Hearing and talking are also required to communicate with employees and benefits vendors.  Visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and view a computer screen.
