Position: Student Extension Intern FLSA Status: Hourly-Non Exempt
Department: Extension/Equity Job Status: Part-time/10 hrs. weekly
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., contingent on the student’s class schedule, some weekend/evening hours with supervision.
Salary: $15.00/hour, 10 Hrs./Week
Reports To: Marjorie Nussbaum, Extension & Equity Coordinator

Purpose of Position:
This position assists LPTC Extension staff with planning, planting, and maintaining experiential learning gardens, community education programming, and office-related duties under the LPTC Extension: Strengthening Communities through Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources Education grant. This position is grant-funded but may be continued contingent upon additional grant funding and satisfactory evaluation. Must be able to work independently and safely indoors and outdoors.
Job Responsibilities:
- Prepare annual, perennial, and vegetable garden beds for planting;
- Weed and water gardens;
- Maintain hoop house structure and plantings;
- Utilize and maintain a variety of equipment used in gardening and landscaping;
- Harvest garden vegetables;
- Maintain LPTC Extension facilities;
- Assist with record keeping and program marketing;
- Assist with educational workshops.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Must currently be enrolled in classes at LPTC;
- Must be seeking a degree in Environmental Science or Diversified Ag
- Must be in good academic standing;
- Have a genuine interest in agriculture, natural resources, or sustainable lifestyles;
- Excellent attention to detail;
- Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills;
- Experience safely operating garden machinery;
- Knowledgeable of computers, word processing, and data collection;
- Knowledgeable of landscape and greenhouse management preferred but not required;
- Experience in carpentry or construction is helpful but not required;
- Must be reliable and adhere to work schedule;
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently at multiple locations;
- Be willing to participate in staff development training and workshops as directed;
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work outdoors for extended lengths of time and in all weather conditions;
- Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to be covered by the Tribes insurance
- Pass a pre-employment drug screening;
- Pass a background screening.
Condition of Employment:
- Must pass a pre-employment criminal background screen.
- Must be able to pass a drug screening.
