Absecon Veterinary Hospital (AVH) is privately owned, and has been a pillar in the community providing comprehensive veterinary care to Atlantic County and surrounding towns since 1980. In 2022, our hospital obtained its Fear Free Certification, which means we practice Fear Free methods of handling and restraint of your pets to reduce their fear, anxiety, and stress at the vet. In 2020, we proudly opened the doors of our emergency service and expanded our exotics care. Our emergency service acts as an extension of other primary care hospitals in the area, with the goal of supporting their teams by providing after-hours services and hospitalization

The Absecon Veterinary Hospital General Practice Internship Program is structured to provide new graduate veterinarians with mentorship and support as they enter clinical practice and receive specialized training in primary care, emergency medicine, and special interests (interns are eligible for a 2 week rotation in one of Mount Laurel Animal Hospital's specialty departments if desired). This internship offers a comprehensive training experience that provides exposure to a wide range of veterinary disciplines. Interns will leave the program with increased competence and confidence in their clinical skills, preparing them for a successful career in veterinary medicine.

Mentorship Support Provided:

  • One-on-one mentoring and assistance on cases and surgeries with experienced veterinarians.
  • Collaboration and support on cases seen during shifts. New graduates are never scheduled alone without a senior veterinarian available for support.
  • Weekly Intern Rounds to discuss cases, communication, and other pertinent topics.
  • Periodic educational lectures to enhance learning.
  • Quarterly performance reviews and evaluations.
  • Quarterly wet labs to hone technical skills.

Responsibilities:

Interns will have a schedule consisting of generally two general practice shifts, a shift in the emergency department, and a surgery day. The intern will be scheduled with a senior associate veterinarian on the emergency and surgery shifts. In the general practice, interns will have ample time for shadowing, and then wean onto a schedule that allows them to become oriented with the practice, and build relationships with clients and the team. 

During emergency department shifts, interns are expected to assist with 1-3 hospitalized cases, performing duties such as examining patients, adjusting treatment plans, contacting owners and primary veterinarians, and finalizing medical records in collaboration with the attending veterinarian. Interns are expected to assist with incoming emergency cases, participate in rounds, provide case updates as necessary, and assist with surgeries and procedures, as time allows. 

During surgery department shifts, the interns are expect to complete pre-anesthetic exams on patients, review charts and prepare sedation and anesthesia protocols (which are finalize with the attending veterinarian), and assist with surgeries under the guidance of the senior veterinarians. Interns will be scheduled their own procedures, beginning with spays and neuters, to build confidence and hone skills. More advanced procedures will be added onto the intern's schedule as they progress during the year.

Interns have the opportunity to rotate through specialty (MLAH), farm animal (Cape Veterinary Hospital), and acupuncture (AVH) departments for 2 weeks per year. If more time is desired, this can be approved on a case by case basis. 


Other responsibilities include:

  • Attend weekly Intern Rounds, discussing difficult cases, communication challenges, and other relevant topics.
  • Participate in journal club and present two Morbidity & Mortality rounds throughout the year.
  • Attend enrichment lectures and mandatory meetings to continue professional development.
  • Participate in weekly rounds held on Wednesdays from 8AM to 9AM or 9AM to 10AM.

 

Benefits, Vacation and Holidays: 

  • Interns are provided 3 weeks of vacation.
  • If the intern needs time off but does not want to use a vacation day, the intern may switch shifts with other interns.  
  • The hospital recognizes eight holidays: Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day. Interns are expected to work half of the holidays (i.e., four-holiday shifts).

Salary: Starting at $90,000/year

 

Educational Requirements: DVM or equivalent, NJ State Veterinary License.
