Description

Basic Function Build and preserve homes for families in need of a decent place to live! Perform and manage others in the performance of tasks directly related to building and repairing homes, while upholding the standards of partnership, quality, safety, and team participation. Construction interns are part of Habitat Charlotte’s HabiCorps program and various trainings are required.

Essential Functions

  • Members will assist in the preservation or construction of homes in one or more of the following three ways: through repairing homes through the Habitat Charlotte Home Repair Program which repairs owner occupied homes, through the building of new Habitat homes or through repairing/rehabbing existing homes for sale to Habitat homeowners
  • Assist in the execution of all aspects of building or renovating a Habitat house from lot clearing/demolition to final inspections and punch list
  • Relate to volunteers and homeowners as a friend, mentor and trainer, patiently instructing and encouraging others in tasks and participation
  • Promote partnership among all participants in the Habitat program, giving special attention to the needs and concerns of homeowners; and enhancing communication between staff, volunteers, and homeowners.
  • Perform tasks that are team priorities
  • Assist in planning for each service day to insure that all necessary resources -- material and human -- are available to complete the task list
  • Follow Habitat Charlotte’s method of building using the Habitat Charlotte Approved Methods Construction Manual.
  • Maintain Habitat equipment, as assigned.
  • Complete tasks on time

Qualifications

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required:

  • Interest, willingness and ability to serve beside all types of people with-in a commitment to the Habitat program
  • Operate as a team member, communicating openly and maintaining respect for others. Foster good relationships with staff, volunteers, homeowners, inspectors and sub-contractors. Remain Flexible.
  • Organize and follow through with tasks and responsibilities. Show initiative and willingness to learn. Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to and interest in acquiring and maintaining a knowledge of building standards and methods
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding, ability to work and maneuver on roofs and high spaces
  • Ability to work in tight confines and within crawlspaces, wearing a respirator as needed
  • Ability to maneuver over uneven ground
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Ability to stand most or all of any given day.
  • Ability to work outside for extended periods of time during all months of the year.

Internal Interactions: Construction staff, other Habitat staff as needed

External Interactions:

  • Habitat Volunteers and Donors
  • Habitat Homeowners

Level of Authority: Responsible for execution of specific construction tasks and projects as assigned. Does not have direct reports.

Estimated Time Commitment: 40 hours/week; Monday - Friday or Tuesday – Saturday depending on the department, approximately 7:00am-4:00pm, with exact starting times depending on the time of year, the weather, and the construction schedule.
